2024 BWHS BOYS CROSS COUNTRY RECAP

November 13, 2024

A Season of Growth, Development, and Building for the Future

In his fourth year coaching the Big Walnut High School Boys Cross Country team (and third year as head coach), Coach Ryan Borland emphasized growth and development as the central themes for the 2024 season.

With a young team, the focus was on building consistency in training and racing and laying a strong foundation for the years ahead. The hard work paid off, as the team finished the season with a 99-52 record, showcasing their progress and resilience.

A key turning point for the team came at the Dublin Jerome Invitational, where many runners discovered they could compete with some of the best in Central Ohio and gained the confidence to push their limits and race with more ambition for the rest of the season.

Several team members earned special recognition for their outstanding performances:

  • Austyn Fox earned All-OCC honors and is now the 9th fastest runner in Big Walnut history.
  • Nathan Ward also received All-OCC recognition, ranking as the 16th fastest in school history.
  • Brody King secured his place as the 28th fastest in school history.

These three athletes not only delivered on the course but also provided strong leadership to their teammates, setting an example with their dedication and commitment.

The seniors on this year’s team leave behind a legacy of service, demonstrating what it means to lead by example and showing the younger runners the importance of servant leadership. This team culture is evolving under the “Eagle Elite” mindset, a guiding principle that Coach Borland is working to instill. The goal is to be “Elite” in every way, focusing on Effort, Leadership, Initiative, Team-Centered Mindset, and Energy — values that lay the groundwork for success both on and off the course.

Looking to next season, Coach Borland is excited to see how the team will build on this year’s growth and carry these experiences forward. He believes the team has matured tremendously and is positioned to reach new heights.

Be on the lookout for the team’s Run-A-Thon fundraiser next summer! This event will allow the community to support the boys’ long-distance training goals and cheer them on as they continue to pursue excellence.
