2024 OCC CHAMPIONS

Under the leadership of Coach Lloyd Huffer, the Big Walnut High School Girls Golf team celebrated an unforgettable season in 2024.

Coach Huffer, who has led the varsity team for the past eight years and previously coached middle school baseball for four years, set ambitious goals this season: winning the Ohio Capital Conference (OCC) title, sending more than one player to Districts, advancing the team to Districts, and aiming for a spot at the state tournament. And this season, Big Walnut Girls Golf reached several key milestones that set a high bar for future teams.

The team made history by winning the OCC Championship—the first OCC title in Big Walnut Girls Golf history. This huge achievement marked a turning point, and the team is looking forward to hanging that banner soon. As Coach Huffer noted, this success reshaped the team's mindset, as they went from the hunters to the hunted. In addition to the OCC victory, the girls challenged themselves by playing in more tournaments against higher-level competition, which took them out of their comfort zone and helped them break four school records along the way.

The season was full of memorable highlights, including defeating Centerburg and Grove City, a much larger school Big Walnut hadn’t beaten before. The team’s dedication to physical fitness, with many players working hard in the gym over the summer, paid off. Six out of seven team members lowered their scores by at least two strokes from 2023, with three players cutting more than five strokes.

Standout performances this year included:

  • Gracyn Alexander (Junior): Set school records for the lowest scores—33 for 9 holes and 71 for 18 holes.
  • Charlie Burgess (Freshman): Claimed the #2 spot on the team and showed remarkable consistency.
  • Adde Alexander (Sophomore): Improved her 2023 score by five strokes, moving up from #6 to #3 on the depth chart.

The team’s lone senior, Lauren Haley, served as a role model with her work ethic, positive attitude, and dedication to her teammates. The team culture fostered a balance between individual improvement and collective goals, with each player focusing on doing their job, being smart, staying prepared, and putting in the work.

Key contributors to the season’s success included Gracyn Alexander, who set the standard for hard work, and Addison Dickerson, who consistently improved her scores and encouraged her teammates throughout the year.

Looking forward, the team has every reason to be optimistic. With all players returning next year, the goals are clear: defend their OCC title, advance the team to Districts, and aim to send a player to the state tournament.

With hard work in the offseason and a strong focus in 2025, the Big Walnut Girls Golf team is ready to build on this historic season and reach even greater heights.
